Terraform Mukuru: Micro-Wetlands Project’s goal is to improve the quality and develop the design of the pilot wetlands project in Nairobi. Most of the rivers in Nairobi city are heavily contaminated by sewage, industrial pollutants and trash. These rivers run through neighborhoods where there is almost no access to clean water for household activities or gardening. Terraform Mukuru aim is to build cheap and small-scale wetlands that could be used all over the city to offer communities purified river water for re-greening their neighborhoods and completing daily chores. The project is based on scientific biomimicry, emulating nature-based systems to filter pollutants. They utilize a filter medium made of gravel, sand, and rocks to remove solid contaminants and hydrophilic plants to deliver oxygen to waterlogged soils for microbial breakdown of contaminants.
